Calling a solar-powered quartz watch innovative seems a bit of a stretch but when 10 minutes of sunning gets you 40 hours of operational power, we say fair enough. It was TAG Heuer movements director Carole Forestier who reminded us that the brand’s solargraph goes a full 10 months from a full charge of just 14 hours, and that gives the owner a huge advantage. Oh yes, and the charging up works just as well in artificial light as it does in sunlight. At WWG this year, we learned how this technology is perfectly powering the new generation of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph 40mm collection. Seamlessly balancing the rugged, adventurous spirit of an outdoor tool watch with an elevated sense of modern refinement, these latest timepieces represent a masterclass in everyday excellence.
Of course, one does not contemplate this sort of watch for anything north of $1,000 without said qualities, and a good backstory. The tale of the Aquaracer is deeply rooted in a legacy of performance, beginning in 1978 when Jack Heuer introduced the Reference 844 to conquer the challenges of the ocean. By 2004, the collection officially adopted the Aquaracer moniker, cementing six legendary design hallmarks, including a unidirectional rotating bezel and 200m water-resistance. Today, the brand pushes these boundaries further by marrying its historic dive-watch DNA with its pioneering Solargraph technology, transforming natural and artificial light into pure horological energy.
At the heart of this release are the redesigned 40mm models, which receive significant ergonomic and aesthetic upgrades. A newly sculpted bezel with reintroduced design elements, sharper case geometry, and distinctive fluting (the grippy bit that mirrors the same design language on the bezel) at 9 o’clock create a more assertive, contemporary posture on the wrist. The addition of an interchangeable bracelet system gives this watch everything it needs to play at the highest levels for sports models.
The collection manifests in two distinct steel and two titanium references, each telling its own visual story. The stainless steel versions feature dials in deep blue or vibrant green, adorned with the collection’s signature horizontal lines that mimic the shifting textures of nature. For a bolder and more technical aesthetic, a sandblasted Grade 2 titanium reference pairs a Grade 5 titanium bezel with a black dial, highlighted by striking polar blue accents for optimal legibility. Meanwhile, a higher polish (literally) arrives in a full Grade 5 titanium model, where the nuanced and soft grey tones of the metal elegantly contrast with warm rose gold accents on the dial.
