In an exclusive shoot for GRAZIA Singapore, celebrity wedding photographer Jose Villa joins forces with event-planning extraordinaire Lelian Chew of The Wedding Atelier and celebrated couturier Guo Pei—three masters of their craft, united by a shared belief in beauty, intention, and intimacy.

Jose Villa’s reputation tends to arrive before he does. Even if his name does not immediately register, chances are you have already encountered his work—circulating quietly but insistently across social feeds, society pages, and the most beautifully produced wedding albums. That kaleidoscopic celebration of cultures at Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding? Villa was behind the lens. More recently, his photographs offered the first glimpse of Hailee Steinfeld’s wedding to NFL quarterback Josh Allen, as well as Demi Lovato’s much-discussed nuptials.

When clients request Villa—even at the very highest tier—it is not simply a beautiful record of their wedding they are after. What they seek is a Jose Villa image: recognisable without being repetitive, romantic without feeling staged. “People come to me because of how I see and how I interpret moments,” he says. That sensibility sits at the heart of fine art wedding photography, a genre that privileges narrative and atmosphere over strict photojournalism. Villa’s work has not only helped define this approach, but quietly set the benchmark for it.

“Some clients come in with a very clear visual language; others just say, ‘We love your work. Do your thing.’ I have a lot of freedom, and that’s intentional,” Villa says. The challenge lies in balancing his signature aesthetic with an honest portrayal of each couple—a balance he navigates with ease. “I want my images to feel airy but grounded, elegant but real,” he explains. “Soft light, natural colour, and emotion over perfection.”

Of course, weddings are rarely serene behind the scenes. They are emotional, high-pressure affairs, where expectations can escalate as quickly as timelines unravel. Add celebrity, privacy concerns, and family dynamics, and the margin for error narrows further. “Expectations can be intense, and emotions run high,” Villa admits. “I try to be a calming presence—someone who brings things back to what actually matters.”

That steady hand is something Lelian Chew, wedding planner to Asia’s elite and a frequent collaborator, knows well. “Most of our clients are high-profile individuals who tend to fall into two extremes,” Chew says. “Either they have a significant social following, or they prefer to maintain their privacy through strict NDAs.”

Ensuring photography unfolds seamlessly under such conditions requires meticulous preparation: anticipating light shifts, managing pacing, and choreographing transitions long before the day itself. With Villa, Chew finds an intuitive partner. Over time, the pair have developed an unspoken rhythm—one that requires little explanation. Jose has a way of capturing both the grandeur of a wedding and its quiet, fleeting moments,” she says. For Chew, Villa’s most memorable images are often the ones she did not even realise he was taking. “A subtle glance between family members, a brief expression, a pause in the middle of the fanfare. That’s what makes Jose’s work so powerful.”

For all the acclaim, Villa remains anchored to what first drew him to weddings. Success, for him, is not measured in industry acclaim or follower counts on social media—though he has no shortage of either—but in the emotional longevity and humanity of his images. Like Chew, he finds the deepest satisfaction not in spectacle, but in intimacy. “I want my photography to feel honest and timeless—like it belongs to the people in the photos more than to me,” he reflects. “Those images feel like truth, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
