The legendary Giorgio Armani has died. He was 91 years old.

The news was announced by the Armani Group, which also shared a statement from the employees and family members of the Italian fashion designer: “In this company, we have always felt like part of a family. Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication. But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”

A private funeral will be held for the designer on 7 September in the Armani/Teatro building in Milan.

There were signs of Armani’s health failing this year. The designer notably did not appear at the Giorgio Armani menswear and the Emporio Armani Spring/Summer 2026 shows back in June as he was “recovering at home” at the time, according to a brand statement.

But the workaholic designer was nonetheless occupied with several projects in 2025. This year, Armani curated and presented a retrospective exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of his haute couture label, Giorgio Armani Privé. He was also set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his namesake fashion brand with a fashion show at Milan Fashion Week in September, coinciding with the opening of another exhibition at the Pinacoteca di Brera museum.

It goes without saying that Armani leaves behind a rich legacy, encompassing several brands including Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani and A|X Armani Exchange and Armani Privé. A master of tailoring, Armani showed his first menswear collection in 1974. He founded his eponymous fashion brand in 1975, and quickly established himself as one of the most influential Italian designers—and certainly one that celebrities could turn to when they needed a dress or a suit for the red carpet.

“Giorgio Armani is a company with fifty years of history, built with emotion and patience,” says a statement from the Armani Group. “Giorgio Armani always made independence—of thought and action—his hallmark. The company is, now and always, a reflection of this spirit. His family and employees will carry the Group forward in respect and continuity of these values.”
